Sand Falls Pavilion

2022

Sand Falls is a pavilion in the rural outback of Broken Hill, Australia located in the southern hemisphere. Broken Hill is a small mining town with a desert climate. The pavilion design is reflective of the area’s environment and climate. The architecture, much like a mineshaft, has many routes, some leading deeper into the earth than others, with areas buried in the surrounding hill. Three experiential spaces (Intensification, Awareness, Contrast) have different emphases on thermal comfort.

Dec 21:The wind is slightly strong walking up the hill and though the sun is out, the air is cold. The sand on a windy day is piling up alongside the walls of the building. Entering through the doorway, the chill of the wind is left outside. Inside, the sound of the roaring wind is coming from a large glass tube with sand whirling around, a storm contained behind glass. An orange glow takes over the space but around the tube is a darker space. The wind is quiet yet still audible. Walking down the stairs you look up at a small skylight partially illuminating the space as it's partially covered in sand, reminding you where you are.

June 21: The wind and the dry hot air dries you of moisture as you breathe rapidly through your mouth trying to fill your lungs with as much air as possible. The sand piling up against the side of the building's entrance is just as unavoidable in a gust like this, but at least the space inside offers a refuge. Inside is cooler and windless, a relief to the stinging sand and hot sun outside. The interior is just as loud though, howling as a central tube vibrates with the intensity of the pressurized air and dust blasting against it. Flowing through the space into a large domed room, the wind is loud here too. From here you see a dust devil in the distance stretching into the sky. The steel and glass keep this space safe, but the heat and white noise from the elements outside cause one to relax and watch the chaos of the Australian outback.
